Senior Art Exhibition
Humans are complex and chaotic. It can be difficult to relate one individual to another, but I challenge that there is always a link. On a fundamental level, aren’t all human beings associated as a whole? Our connections can be hard to conceptually grasp, but I hope to use art in a way that enhances and even simplifies these intricate relationships.
When drawing a model, I symbolically reach out and bring that person near. Their complexion becomes a part of mine and through their image I tell a story. In this process, I also instill a part of myself in the image. Perhaps more than any other image, the human figure presents the greatest opportunity to explore all elements of visual art within a single subject.
Using multiple surfaces, varying in transparency, I create portraits of the human figure. When creating a piece, I crop, zoom, and overlay images in ways which form interesting and unique special shapes in both the figure and the absence of space surrounding the figure.
Committed to the idea that as a whole, humans are connected, I build these large collages to visually represent how individuals are intertwined.
As an artist who has gained insight and skill through figure drawing classes, I’m incredibly thankful for an art department that offers opportunity. More importantly, I owe many thanks to my instructor, Mary, who not only encourages, but personally tailors lessons to my individual strengths and passions. She is a professor who’s become family over my four years here at GU.
